Applies to

Lifts serving the public or workplaces, particularly platform lifts and accessibility-focused installations.

Summary

Where a lift forms part of the accessible route into or within a building, it must meet defined dimensions, controls and signage requirements. EN 81-70 (passenger lifts) and EN 81-41 (platform lifts) set the technical detail.

Who must comply

Service providers, employers and building owners with a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled users.

Key requirements

  • Minimum car dimensions for wheelchair access (typically 1100 × 1400 mm).
  • Door clear opening width — 800 mm minimum, 900 mm preferred.
  • Tactile and Braille buttons, audible floor announcements and visual indicators.
  • Mirror, handrail and contrasting colour scheme inside the car.
  • Levelling accuracy within ±5 mm of the landing.

How we help

We survey existing lifts against EN 81-70/41 and Approved Document M, and specify modernisations that bring older equipment in line with current accessibility expectations.
