Controllers manage every aspect of lift behaviour: dispatching, door sequencing, motor drive control, fault diagnostics and safety-chain monitoring. Older relay-logic and early microprocessor controllers (Otis 511, Schindler Variodyn, KONE V3F early generations, Express Lift FAA) become unsupported as parts dry up — modernising to a current open-protocol controller restores reliability and brings the lift in line with EN 81-20 safety expectations.
Symptoms we look for
- Intermittent faults that ‘cure themselves’ on power cycle
- Long door-dwell times or doors that re-open without obvious cause
- Frequent levelling errors or stops between floors
- Original manufacturer no longer supplies spares
- Insurance examiner reports flagging PESSRAL or UCM concerns
What we do
- Like-for-like controller replacement with manufacturer-independent equipment (we work with all major UK platforms).
- VVVF drive package matched to existing or new hoist motor.
- Full safety-circuit upgrade to EN 81-20: rope brake or sheave clamp for UCM protection.
- New car and landing fixtures, position indicators and emergency communications.
- Commissioning, type-tests and a complete Schedule 18 documentation pack.
Lifecycle expectation
A controller modernisation typically extends a lift’s reliable life by 15–25 years and reduces in-service faults by 60–80% in the first 12 months. Energy consumption can drop 30–40% once paired with a modern VVVF drive.
